Wi-Fi uses radio communication to connect devices to an access point, usually built into a home router. The router then connects that local network to the internet through a separate wide-area connection. Devices share the radio channel, so distance, walls and neighboring networks affect performance.

How it works

The Wi-Fi bars on a phone show signal strength, not necessarily internet speed. Congestion, an overloaded router, a slow broadband link or a busy channel can all produce a poor experience. Newer bands can be faster but may travel less effectively through walls.

Practical takeaways

Place the router in an open, central location, update its firmware and use WPA2 or WPA3 with a long unique password. Separate guest devices when possible and avoid repeating a weak signal through too many cheap extenders.

Changing the Wi-Fi password does not change the speed. Improving placement and reducing interference often helps more than buying a faster plan.
